Over in the UK, Volkswagen has enhanced the appeal of the Beetle with the addition of two new engines. Joining the base 1.2 TFSI and 1.4 TSI will be a 2.0-litre TDI turbo diesel producing 138hp and a range-topping 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged petrol rated at 197hp, both available with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed dual clutch DSG gearboxes.
With the 2.0-litre TSI, the Beetle goes from zero to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 224 km/h, while the TDI takes 9.5 seconds for the standard sprint and can reach 198 km/h.
What the diesel loses in performance over the petrol, however, it gains predictably in efficiency, with a combined fuel economy figure of 57.6 mpg UK, which equates to 129g of CO2 emitted per kilometre. Meanwhile, the petrol model returns a combined fuel economy of 38.2mpg UK with CO2 emissions of 172g/km.
The Beetle 2.0 TDI comes in either mid-level Design or top-line Sport trim, while the 2.0-litre TSI 138hp model is available in Sport or special-edition Turbo Black and Turbo Silver specification, complete with 'Turbo' decals in either silver or black along the side, door mirrors in silver or black and 19 inch 'Tornado' alloys.
In addition, the 2.0-litre TSI 138hp Sport model uniquely comes with certain specification highlights over and above all other models. These include four-link rear suspension, twin chromed exhaust pipes, red brake callipers and a body-coloured rear diffuser.
The Design trim comes with 17 inch alloy wheels with a choice of two styles, Bluetooth telephone preparation, an RCD 510 DAB CD/radio with MDI multi-device, front fog lights, rear Isofix preparation, an alarm, manual air conditioning, multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel and body-coloured door and dashboard panels.
The range-topping Sport specification adds 18 inch alloys in a choice of styles, tinted glass, cruise control, sports seats, parking sensors, gloss black door mirrors, gloss black dashboard and door panel and 2-Zone electronic climate control.
A wide range of optional equipment is also available on all Beetle models, including Keyless Access, a satellite navigation system, bi-xenon headlights, Fender sound pack and a selection of different alloy wheel designs.
Prices for the all-new Volkswagen Beetle start from £16,600 for the lead-in 1.2-litre TSI powered car with DSG transmission, rising to £24,505 for the Turbo Black and Silver Special edition cars equipped with the 2.0-litre TSI 200PS engine with DSG.
